One thing that most moms dread as they go through pregnancy is the potential that they’ll develop stretch marks.
To reduce your chances of getting stretch marks, it’s best to use some kind of topical treatment on your skin. Personally, I prefer natural remedies or essential oils whenever possible, because they actually work better and I don’t have to worry about the side effects from harsh chemicals.
I’ve had dozens of people ask me what the best treatment for stretch marks is and, in working with other moms during their pregnancies as well as what I do for myself, I’ve tried several stretch mark treatments. The ones I’ve been the happiest with are carrier oils mixed with essential oils.
Below I’ve put together a list of what I feel like are the best essential oils for stretch marks.
What Causes Stretch Marks During Pregnancy
Stretch marks are common during pregnancy because of the sudden weight gain and because your skin stretches quite a bit to make room for your growing baby.
Some people think it’s only your stomach you need to worry about stretch marks forming, but they actually can develop just about anywhere on your body. They can form on your legs, behind your knees, your hips, stomach, breasts, arms and more. I’ve even seen them develop on people’s feet when they became swollen.
If your skin isn’t well hydrated and you aren’t using some kind of topical treatment to prevent stretch marks, your chances of getting them are much higher.
You may have been told that there’s nothing you can do to prevent stretch marks during pregnancy and that some people will just get them while others won’t.
In my experience this just isn’t true and every time I hear it, it bothers me. I don’t like hearing there’s nothing moms can do especially when I know there’s a lot that can be done!
I’ve worked with enough moms during their pregnancies as well as tried things throughout my own to know what does and doesn’t work.
Where is the Best Place to Get Essential Oils
The reason for this is because I always felt like essential oils were too expensive for me to use in my home. I also wasn’t convinced that they really worked.
I started using them regularly after several very positive experiences with them and after I found a place to get high quality, organic oils for a third, sometimes a fourth, the cost most distributors sell them for.
You can get cheap oils from Amazon but I would strongly advise against it because a lot of people take advantage of their popularity and sell diluted oils at a discount price. It’s impossible to know if the person you’re buying from has the real oils or a diluted version.
It’s always best to buy them directly from the distributor.
I personally love Mountain Rose Herbs Essential Oils because I’ve used them countless times in my home, they work phenomenally well, and most, if not all, their oils are sold for a fraction of the price you’ll find anywhere else.
I’ve tried several brands of oils and after a significant amount of research into a few distributors, the two I narrowed it down to as my top picks were doTerra oils and Mountain Rose Herbs oils.
I’ve gotten great results with both, but I couldn’t stomach the cost of doTerra oils, especially when I got the same great results at a fourth the price with Mountain Rose Herbs. Some of the oils I’ve listed below are as cheap as $4.00 a bottle.
What Are the Best Essential Oils for Stretch Marks
The oils I’ve listed below aren’t the only oils you can use for stretch marks but they are definitely some of the best ones! Keep in mind that these oils are very concentrated and it’s best to always mix them with a carrier oil of your choice before you use them.
Carrot Seed – Comes from carrot seeds and is extracted through steam distillation. It is used to treat scars, reduce fine lines, and, improve skin tone and elasticity. This oil is actually used in a number of topical skin treatments for conditions like wrinkles, acne, psoriasis, and eczema. Mixes well with Cedarwood, Cinnamon, Geranium, and Citrus Oils. This shouldn’t be used while you’re pregnant or nursing.
Cedarwood – This oil comes from cedar wood and is extracted through steam distillation. It works with all skin types from oily to dry to balance the skin and clear it of any impurities. Mixes well with Patchouli, Rose, and Vetiver Oil.
Frankincense – Comes from the dried sap of the Boswellia Sacra tree. Itis obtained by cutting the bark and letting the sap inside stream out and harden.It is by far, one of the best essential oils you can use to heal scars and prevent new ones. It has been used for years to treat numerous ailments, not just skin conditions. Mixes well with Bergamot, Cinnamon, Geranium, Lavender, Lemon, Neroli, Patchouli, Rose, and Vetiver oils.
Geranium – This oil comes from the flowers and leaves of the geranium plant and is extracted through steam distillation. It is an excellent essential oil to use for skin treatments. Geranium oil revitalizes skin cells, helps to heal collagen, and increases your skin’s elasticity. This makes it very useful in both preventing stretch marks and healing/fading existing ones.Mixes well with Bergamot, Jasmine, Lemon, Neroli, Patchouli, and Rose Oil. This shouldn’t be used while you’re pregnant.
Helichrysum – Comes from the flowers of the helichrysum plant. It is extracted through steam distillation. I use this oil for much more than treating my skin. It’s one of my go to oils during postpartum recovery to help with bleeding/hemorrhaging, c-section incision, and sore nipples. It’s skin healing properties include tissue and cell regeneration as well as promoting new growth. It nourishes your skin and improves its elasticity. Mixes well with Bergamot, Citrus Oils, Geranium, Lavender, Neroli, Rose, and Vetiver Oil
Jasmine – Comes from jasmine flowers and is solvent extracted. Jasmine Oil is typically used for a number of skin conditions. It can be used on oily and dry skin. It helps to hydrate your skin and increases its elasticity. Mixes with Bergamot, Lemon, Neroli, Patchouli, and Rose Oil. This shouldn’t be used while you’re pregnant or nursing as it can significantly reduce your milk supply.
Lavender – Comes from the flowers of the lavender plant and is extracted through steam distillation. It is commonly used to treat skin conditions like cellulite, dark spots, rashes, and acne. It also helps to reduce the look of stretch marks and rejuvenates your skin. Mixes well with Bergamot, Cedarwood, Eucalyptus, Geranium, Lemon, Patchouli, Rose, and Vetiver Oil.
Neroli – Comes from the blossoms off a bitter orange tree and is extracted through steam distillation. Neroli oil is one of the best oils you can use to help your skin regenerate and to heal scarred tissue, including stretch marks. Mixes well with Frankincense, Geranium, Jasmine, Lavender, and Rose Oil.
Patchouli – Comes from the leaves of the patchouli plant and is extracted through steam distillation. Works to repair damaged tissue, enable cell regeneration and also promotes new cell growth. Mixes with Bergamot, Cedarwood, Cinnamon, Frankincense, Geranium, Lavender, Neroli, and Rose Oil.
I don’t use these because they’re better than other options, but because I actually bought them for other purposes and later found that they do a great job of treating stretch marks and other skin conditions as well. That means I get more out of them 🙂
How Can You Get the Best Results from Your Stretch Mark Treatment
I’ve found that it takes more than just applying oils, creams, or other stretch mark treatments to the areas of concern.
In order to get the best results possible from whatever you’re using to treat/prevent stretch marks, you should make sure you’re doing the following 3 things:
Stay Hydrated: Your skin is more prone to tearing and loses its elasticity when you don’t drink enough water. You should be drinking at least 8-10 glasses a day. I actually aim for 13-14 myself but that took some time to work up to.
Get Your Sleep: While you’re asleep is when your body focuses on healing and building itself back up. If you aren’t getting enough of it, your body is more likely to break down.
Eat Well: It shouldn’t be a surprise that your skin’s health is dependent on what you eat. Too much sugar and processed foods weakens not only your body, but your skin. If you focus on eating a good variety, your body has the nutrients and vitamins it needs to prevent/treat stretch marks.
